[ This is stupid, and that puzzle he was given is stupid. Unfortunately, Sasuke hasn't really been able to keep himself from trying to solve it.

[Layton takes a moment to remember who Sasuke is, which is all the more difficult when he never actually learned his name or face. So it's more like he vaguely remembers Sasuke's voice.]

Why, yes I am. [Light bulb!!] Ah, I remember now. Petals Around the Rose, correct?

... yeah. [ Can you tell from the way he said it that he hates this puzzle? Because you should be able to. ]

I wanted to ask: where did you come up with it?

[reminded]

I heard it from a colleague in London, back in my home world. Why do you ask?

[He is wondering where this line of questioning is going. Should he be grateful that said colleague is far, far away?]

[ Another pause. ] And where did they hear it?

[reminded]

I'm not quite sure. Another colleague, perhaps. I believe it's a well-circulated puzzle, if somewhat underground.

[avenger]

[ Hm. ] Then I'll ask something else—do you know how or where it originated?

[reminded]

There was an article about it in a magazine which popularized it, if I recall correctly... [Pause.] You aren't trying to look up an answer, are you?

[avenger]

What? [ That's an honest what there, and somewhat proud and offended. Him, cheat? No. Really. Him? Naruto, yeah, but not him.

An Uchiha would never do that. ] I don't need to cheat. I can figure this out on my own.

[reminded]

[Oh, good. He likes that attitude.]

Of course. My apologies if I offended you. Though if you're trying decipher the puzzle, don't you think a few more rounds of the dice would be more helpful?

[avenger]

[ Hm. ] I'll assume that means the origin doesn't have much to do with how to solve it.

[ More dots here. ] Fine, I'll take another roll.

[reminded]

Very good! I admire your tenacity. [Luckily for Sasuke, he's got dice in his coat again today. He moves aside his tea (because he was totally sitting outside and drinking tea when Sasuke found him) and gives the dice a roll.]



What is the score?

[avenger]

[ Three of those rolls are the same as a previous roll. Six, four, and two.

The answer to that set was two. Maybe it's the same solution...? Probably not, and at this point he'd prefer not to guess. Too bad he's going to do it anyway! Contemplatively: ] Two.

[reminded]

[If he knew Sasuke's reasoning, he would at least commend him for remembering the last roll from so long ago.]

Four.

[He rolls again:]



Give it another try.

[avenger]

[ Four? Okay, double of what it was the previous time. Something about the dice that was different changed the solution.

Question was, why?

Maybe he can find out with this roll. There's three mixed in that were the same as before, and that one was a high number. Eight, if he remembered correctly. ] Twelve.

[reminded]

That's correct! If you get the next one right, then you may be on to something.

[He rolls:]

[avenger]

[ Hold on, he recognizes this roll. ] Four.

[reminded]

[Well, what were the chances of that? They could make a puzzle out of it. But there's also a chance that Sasuke got the answer by the correct means, so he'll give him the benefit of the doubt.]

Right! Now then, let's give it one more roll. Answer correctly, and I think we can consider this puzzle conquered.
