5 + 5 + 5 = 550

It appears I have my arithmetic out of sorts. However, it would be a shame to scrap the equation entirely. Can you help me correct it by adding a single straight line?

[This one might take him a while. Rudy likes to think he's somewhat decent with his math, but that one has him stuck. Because it's easier, he writes the problem out in the journal to look over.

Messily, he writes (and crosses out) a bunch of stuff down, hoping there's something in this he might catch onto. And for a moment, he's stumped. How do you get ninety-one out of two eights? Changing it to multiplication wouldn't work, for one. Especially now that he remembers it's supposed to be unaltered.]

Eight added to another eight equals sixteen, wouldn't it?

I was hoping a more practical puzzle would suit a practical-seeming sort such as yourself, but perhaps I should have gone for something more overtly logical. I can't predict them all, I suppose.

If I think it might appeal more to their inner puzzler, then yes. Then again, I try not to make assumptions about a person before I truly get to know them. That would be rather ungentlemanly of me.

Having a gun suddenly pointed at you is likely enough to drive off even the most stubborn of hiccups. Personally, however, I think I'd still prefer the glass of water.

Anyhow, that doesn't sound that different. People live on the islands, we got airships and airplanes, automobiles in the big islands, same kinda livin' situations... bettin' you don't have a plasma cloud sea on Earth, though. [Or maybe they do and it's just above them instead?]

Well, even little gestures like holding a door open for someone behind you or stopping to help a stranger in distress find root in chivalry. I think it is the dedication to everyday selflessness, no matter how big or small the measure, which makes the way of the gentleman so admirable.
