No. 001 - Simple Addition [Written]

[It's about time to give this device a go. In neat, legible writing is simply the following:]

5 + 5 + 5 = 550

It appears I have my arithmetic out of sorts. However, it would be a shame to scrap the equation entirely. Can you help me correct it by adding a single straight line?

It would! But that would be too much tea. [That quantity of tea is not a pleasant thing to think of when he remembers the one experiment he spent the majority of as a Mad Hatter.] Oh, okay, huh? Then how is this supposed to go? I'd need numbers that can add up to 550, right?

I definitely will. Now let's see. We got the 550! And the three fives. And one line's gotta go somewhere.... all those fives only make 15. And with 550 you need to make a lot more than 15...

[He takes some moments to think it over.]

Hey, wait a second...

On the left... when I think of just the last one, it's 5, which is 545 away from 550. Right? And the other two numbers... it's 5 + 5. That seems... like it doesn't work right. But did you ever notice... that if you put a line on the plus sign, it's like a 4! Like... 545?
