No. 001 - Simple Addition [Written]

[It's about time to give this device a go. In neat, legible writing is simply the following:]

5 + 5 + 5 = 550

It appears I have my arithmetic out of sorts. However, it would be a shame to scrap the equation entirely. Can you help me correct it by adding a single straight line?

[... Hmm. Better to draw it out.

It takes him a few minutes as a result, while he adds up the numbers and draws a ladder and some water. Games have shown him that he's much better at solving these things when he can draw it and see it for himself.

And then he thinks. Games have also taught him to look carefully at how something is worded. So, while he was about to write the thirteenth rung, he decides to slowly write another answer instead.]

The ninth? I mean - it's a boat on an ocean. Unless it's really the thirteenth.

[omg he got it right, Billy would be so proud. Teddy grins to himself, not that Layton can see it, but it's still wide and happy.]

I gotta admit, I almost did that. If I didn't do riddles and stuff back home, I probably would've gone straight for the numbers.

Yeah, this is actually the first one I've seen since I showed up. But it looks like you've got a good thing going here.

Oh, and my name's Teddy Altman. Yours?

[There's another pause for a few minutes at that.

No way. No way. Hershel Layton? Professor Layton? He's here?

...

Did he actually solve a puzzle given to him by Professor Layton?

BILLY IS GOING TO FLIP.

Okay, okay. He's cool. Just. Definitely not feeling a bit intimidated and ridiculously happy and suddenly wanting to hear that really deep voice.]

Well, if you keep it with you a lot... Who knows? I wouldn't know if it'd actually work or not, but it can't help to try, right?

Well, I look forward to more puzzles from you, Mr. Layton. You might want to look up a friend of mine sometime: Billy. He's really into puzzles, and he can probably solve them faster than I can.

[And probably die a little too.]
