No. 003 - A Public Service Announcement [voice]

This is Professor Hershel Layton speaking.

An announcement to all students: because our core subject teachers -- and our tutor Miss Grants, incidentally -- have been drafted for the upcoming operation at Region One, school will be suspended until further notice, effective immediately to allow for battle preparations. In short, school is out until we return. If you would like to continue music lessons with Mr. Vessalius, however, I encourage you to approach him individually.

Assignments due in the meantime will be collected when school reopens. But take care not to leave them to the last minute! Allowances will be made for drafted students, but we expect those of you remaining here to stay productive.

[Aaand because why not:]

To all prospective students: as it seems the New Feather cycle has come to a close, we at the school extend an invitation to anyone interested in enrolling. There is no age requirement or education prerequisite; we only ask that you come with a desire to learn. We offer courses in maths, writing, science, art, magic, music, and world sharing, and you need only attend those classes which interest you. While you won't be able to attend immediately due to the draft, I urge anyone who has considered taking part in school to join us when we return.

I wish you all well with your preparations and bid you safe venture.

I'm afraid they can. [He speaks calmly so as not to add to Luke's distress.] It shouldn't be longer than a week. Will you be all right until then?

Professor! It's not me you should worry about!

[He's worried about Luke worrying, because that is what Luke tends to do.]

Don't worry, Luke. I don't count on putting myself in any more danger than is necessary. The battlefield is no place for gentlemen.

[Says the man who keeps finding odd objects to fence with. Luke tugs at his hat in frustration, trying not to go on shouting. That's hardly gentlemanly either.]

You shouldn't have to go at all.

[voice]

[reminded]

[He continues on in the same tone of voice.]

No, none of us should. But it's better I go than you, or Flora, or Czeslaw. The list is already worse than I'd have liked it to be.

Wait - no school?

[What is she going to do with all her free time!!!]

[Well, he must say that he's never heard those words spoken in despair.]

No school. Unless you would like to attend without any teachers to teach you. A study group, perhaps.

A study what? [Why would she wanna study more.]

Why would I wanna study more? [A brief eyeroll! And then she grumbles.] I'm just mad 'cause school's the easiest way to hang out with my friends. It's kinda hard to track everyone down, y'know...

Well, this may be a good opportunity for you to meet your classmates in a less institutional setting. Find other threads you share with them, so to speak.

Oh? And what do you plan to do with your vacation time, Jack?

Why, what else would one do during a vacation? Nap, read a few books, perhaps find some interesting new hobby to occupy one's time, that sort of thing.

In other words, life as usual. But I must admit, it does sound appealing. The rest of us might need a bit of vacation time as well by the time we return.

Mm, those drafts tend to be terrible things, from my experience with them. I do hope that you all come back safely, but I'm sure I'm just worrying for nothing. There are plenty of opportunities to stay out of the fighting itself.

[And he's very worried about you, but also thinks you may be capable of taking care of yourself. And Firo is with him, too. Hopefully they get along better than Firo apparently does with Luke.]

Do I seem that grim? I'll admit it's hard not to feel a little apprehensive. And yes, I have spoken with Firo, as a matter of fact.

It seems that Firo will be on this mission as well. I was wondering -- well, I was hoping that if he needs any assistance, I could ask you to keep an eye out for him.
