[Voice]

[A weeks-long absent face fills the camera, looking much the same as it ever did. Layton's expression is neutral, and if he's suffering any effects from experimentation, they aren't immediately apparent.]

It seems I've missed a great deal in my absence. Apologies to Raine, Helios, and all the rest at school. I can return to work as soon as I'm needed.

[Written]

[And then, almost on a whim, he begins to write out a puzzle:]

On the day before yesterday, the weatherman said, 'Today's weather is different from yesterday's. If the weather is the same tomorrow as it was yesterday, the day after tomorrow will have the same weather as the day before yesterday. But if the weather is the same tomorrow as it is today, the day after tomorrow will have the same weather as yesterday.'

The weatherman's prediction turned out to be true. If it is raining today and it rained the day before yesterday, what was the weather like yesterday?

[With his task done, Layton stares at his writing for a short moment before frowning and closing his journal. There will be plenty of time to think on his walk back home.]

(( OOC: Layton's mallynap effect is the inability to smile. Sorry if he looks a little grim! ))

This is Professor Hershel Layton speaking.

An announcement to all students: because our core subject teachers -- and our tutor Miss Grants, incidentally -- have been drafted for the upcoming operation at Region One, school will be suspended until further notice, effective immediately to allow for battle preparations. In short, school is out until we return. If you would like to continue music lessons with Mr. Vessalius, however, I encourage you to approach him individually.

Assignments due in the meantime will be collected when school reopens. But take care not to leave them to the last minute! Allowances will be made for drafted students, but we expect those of you remaining here to stay productive.

[Aaand because why not:]

To all prospective students: as it seems the New Feather cycle has come to a close, we at the school extend an invitation to anyone interested in enrolling. There is no age requirement or education prerequisite; we only ask that you come with a desire to learn. We offer courses in maths, writing, science, art, magic, music, and world sharing, and you need only attend those classes which interest you. While you won't be able to attend immediately due to the draft, I urge anyone who has considered taking part in school to join us when we return.

I wish you all well with your preparations and bid you safe venture.

(( OOC: Other teachers may respond where applicable! And if you'd like to sign up your character for school, whether now or later, take a gander at this OOC post right over here. ))

[Action?]

[Somewhere, a puzzle sits. Abandoned.

Why? How? Nobody knows. But it looks innocent enough. Little blocks in playful colors, purposefully arranged inside a handcrafted house of wood. The blocks slide easily with a nudge, almost as if they were born to do so. It looks like the big red block would fit perfectly into the space on the right. In fact, it looks like it would be a pretty easy task. Might as well give it a try, right?

But this cheerful little puzzle has a dark secret. To the savvy, it's worth 99 picarats and requires a series of 81 moves at minimum to complete. To the not-as-savvy, that means it's a lot harder than it looks. This is not a puzzle for the weak.]

[Voice, evening]

Good evening, Luceti. I’ll only be a moment. I seem to have lost a puzzle of mine -- a sliding block puzzle, to be precise. Has anyone seen it? I would appreciate any word.

(( OOC: I don’t count on him actually getting the puzzle back, but it can be spotted anywhere and everywhere. And if you'd like to play out puzzle frustrations with someone other than Layton, go right ahead! Puzzle destruction is also a thing that is acceptable. Just sayin'.

P.S.: a video of the puzzle if you want to see it in action. ))
reminded: (Could you repeat that?)
[There sure is a lot of excitement this morning. After getting a vague grip on the situation by talking to some of the wingless newcomers, Layton decides to take a stroll around the village, trunk in hand, and observe. Something very unusual is happening, and there's no point in missing it by staying indoors.

Occasionally, he takes a seat on a bench or at a table and scribbles notes into his journal. Or puzzles into his puzzle index. Because no matter how much hubbub there is, you can never stop the puzzles.]

[It's about time to give this device a go. In neat, legible writing is simply the following:]

5 + 5 + 5 = 550

It appears I have my arithmetic out of sorts. However, it would be a shame to scrap the equation entirely. Can you help me correct it by adding a single straight line?

[Somewhere in his trunk, Professor Layton keeps a journal. It is deep brown in color with gold embellishments, a much more traditional kind of book than the journal supplied by the Malnosso. Within, the Professor records his thoughts on events passed and yet to pass, unable to give up his longtime habit no matter what the setting. The journal's contents are uncoded and easy for anyone to read provided they can get their hands on the journal itself.]

Layton isn't my usual character type, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on how I play him. Praise and criticism are equally welcome!
